It was night. Dark clouds shrouded the stars and the moon from view, wrapping Nisha in a blackness that was held only at bay by the mounted torches lining the streets of the Peak District.
She was dressed in a new black robe that Seraphine had generously donated in exchange for the story of how sheâd managed to win the painting off Sher and how sheâd managed to escape the prison. Of course, she left out how sheâd climbed the red flat-topped mountain and slept under the Angelâs throne. That was a secret best kept to herself.
Her body was stiff as she walked. Exhaustion pulled at her like gravity, dragging her footsteps and pulling on her eyelids. But she couldnât afford to give Sher even a single day.
The day of the Kingâs Fest was fast approaching. She could see the signs of the festival: the light reverie starting in on the residents of the Market and Peak Districts, the decorations being wound around the street poles and banners being hung all along the towering sandstone walls that surrounded the city. Even now, she could hear the distant laughter of Bloodlineds walking the streets. For them, the celebration always began early.
Nisha turned her head toward where King Razhan reigned in his golden-domed palace. Even with it being night, she was still blown away by the shadows of the thousand spires that speared the sky.
She wondered for a moment how in the sundamned hell she was supposed to infiltrate that place and escape with the greatest prize of the Kingâs treasury.
Nisha shook her head. That was a problem for a different time. For now, she had to worry about breaking into Sherâs mansion and stealing that damned key back.
When Sherâs mansion appeared, perched atop the sand dune, Nisha came to a slow stop. She had just seen it, but it still left her in silent wonder. How could such a beautiful place be a home to a man so cruel?
The night was heavy on her shoulders. The black robe felt like a second skin, another layer of darkness to hide her, to let her move unseen through the streets. She made a point to avoid any of the Bloodlined, just in case they decided to report her to the guards. Trouble with the guards was the last thing she needed right now.
She reached the sand dune and stopped, her eyes tracing the contours of the mansion's architecture, searching for the best place to break in. She wouldnât want anyone to hearâ
Nisha blinked. The place was nearly abandoned. She grinned to herself as she realized she could simply break a window and climb through. The chances that Sher would hear would be minimal. Especially in a home the size of his.
The plan was simple: get in, get the key, get out. No confrontations, no complications. It didnât take her long to find a dark window that looked secluded enough from the rest of the property.
She wrapped the bottom of her robe around her fist,
